How to clean solar panels?

1. Safety First: Before cleaning, make sure to turn off the solar panel system as per the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid any electrical hazards. Some solar panels may have specific cleaning instructions, so it's good to review the manual beforehand. Cleaning the panels when they are cool, such as early morning or late evening, helps avoid the rapid evaporation of water and prevents thermal shock to the glass surface.
2. Gather the Necessary Tools: Use a soft cloth, sponge, or brush with soft bristles to avoid scratching the surface of the solar panels. A mixture of water and mild soap (non-abrasive, non-corrosive) is sufficient for cleaning. For panels that are out of reach, a squeegee can help clean them without damaging the surface. Water is typically the main cleaning agent. If possible, use distilled water to avoid leaving mineral deposits on the solar panels.
3. Rinse the Panels: Use a hose to gently rinse off any loose dirt or debris from the surface of the panels. Do not use high-pressure water as it could damage the panels or the mounting system.
4. Wash the Surface: Dip the soft cloth or sponge in a soapy water solution and gently scrub the panels. Avoid using abrasive materials that could scratch the surface. If there are stubborn spots like bird droppings, let water sit on the spot for a few minutes to loosen it before scrubbing lightly.
5. Rinse Again: After scrubbing, rinse the panels again with clean water to remove any soap residue.
6. Dry the Panels: Use a squeegee or a soft cloth to gently remove water from the surface to prevent water spots or streaks. This step is particularly important if you're using hard water.
